The Chester Historical Society
The Chester Historical Society, founded in 1969, is a motivating force in perpetuating the interesting and varied history of our community, the roots of which go back to the early 1700's.
The purpose of the Society is to discover and collect material which may help to establish or illustrate the history of the area, to provide for the preservation of the material, and to make it all accessible to anyone who wishes to study or examine it.
If you moved to Chester because of its historic ambience or are interested in learning more about Chester's history, you should consider becomming a member of the Chester Historical Society. The Society's activities include:
- Programs and demonstrations about Chester's past
- Preservation programs designed to save Chester's historic sites
- Free architectural assistance to owners of historic buildings who are contemplating renovations
- Maintainance of over 3000 artifacts and 5000 historic documents
- An ongoing oral history program that records Chester's " old timers " reminiscings
- Publication of numerous books and maps
- Walking tours of Main Street Chester
The Chester Historical Society also offers published tours and videos. Two popular ones are the Auto Tour and the Chester Stroll.
